Incidence of pericardial effusion during attacks of familial Mediterranean fever.

چکیده
Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive disorder that affects primarily Jews, Armenians, Turks, and Arabs. It is characterised by recurrent, self limited attacks of fever accompanied by inflammation of the peritoneal, synovial, and pleural surfaces. Pericardial involvement is a well known (0.7–1.4%) but rare feature of the disease. 3 Our initial observation of two patients who had recurrent pericarditis as a sole manifestation of FMF has led us to suggest that pericardial inflammation is more prevalent than generally believed. Since echocardiography is a noninvasive and sensitive tool for the detection of pericardial effusion, we undertook an echocardiographic study to assess the exact frequency of pericardial effusions during attacks of FMF.

Pericardial involvement in familial Mediterranean fever.
Two patients with familial Mediterranean fever showed the classic features of pericardial involvement and one of them (Case 2) had pericardial effusion detected by echocardiography. These and previously published cases show that familial Mediterranean fever should be considered as a cause of pericarditis and/or pericardial effusion.

From April 1983 to September 1990, 32 patients with familial mediterranean fever (FMF) were studied. FMF is characterized by short, self-limited, febrile episodes that occur with inflammation of serosal surfaces. Major symptoms include fever and abdominal pain, presenting as acute surgical abdomen. These attacks are associated with considerable morbidity and in some patients lead to unnece...

Familial Mediterranean fever is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by sporadic, paroxysmal attacks of fever and serosal inflammation. Chronic ascites has rarely been described in patients with Familial Mediter...

The familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), also called recurrent polyserositis, is characterized by reccurrent episodes of serositis at pleura, peritoneum, and synovial membrane and fever. We present a patient with recurrent bilateral pleural effusion due to serositis attacks as a first sign of FMF. A 59-year-old Turkish man suffered from recurrent pleuritic chest pain due to pleural effusion and ...

Backgrounds: Pericardial effusion, once common among dialysis patients, has become a rare entity in recent years. Due to its low incidence, its recognition has gained importance among internists, cardiologists, and nephrologists. It can be seen in pre-dialysis patients and in dialysis patients who are on hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Methods: A retrospective study was performed. The sub...
